Redeye Label of the Month Q&A Learn more about our partners in our Monthly Label Spotlight

This Issue: Alex Lichtenauer at Get Better Records

Where do you go to search for new music? Who or what has been a new find you’d like to rave about? GBR is a community-driven label, so it’s word of mouth or the record store! And every now and then, we get a submission that changes our lives, much like ZORA’s album, Z1, or Alien Boy’s record Don’t Know What I Am. And in some cases, we get to revisit older music through reissuing records like Fucked Up’s first LP, Epics in Minutes, or sharing unreleased material from Ted Leo. When and where did the label begin? Keene, NH - 2009. Since then, we’ve released music from all over the so-called United States and Canada while also working with artists from the UK. We’re excited to continue connecting with people all around the world. What is the meaning behind the name for the label? Originally named after Lemuria’s album “Get Better” but evolved into self-determination and to always be open to criticism and striving to “get better”. Describe the general makeup of your team at the label. We are a queer/trans artist-run label. Alex (Control Top) and Koji (who makes music as “KOJI”) both handle A&R and manage the label. Abby (formerly of Potty Mouth) works on art and socials, and Jordan does PR. Together, we partner with our artists to create campaigns to platform their amazing work. How has the label changed since it started? As queer and trans people have become more visible, so has the label. We are working to build a world where queer and trans people get the support, care, and attention they deserve all year round - not just on month that has been co-opted by police and credit card companies. What has been the biggest challenge for you and the label during the Pandemic? The instability and lack of touring has impacted all of us in the music industry, and we are no different. So many of our artists have been affected by COVID, and the effects go far beyond canceled shows; some losing loved ones or having long term health issues. All of the COVID issues compound with and point to the rising tide of anti-trans legislation, forced birth, forever war, police violence, and corporate looting. It’s a challenging time to be alive, let alone make records. These issues disproportionately affect our artists and audience, many of whom are LGBTQIA+, racialized, diasporic, etc. With all that to say, we have seen tremendous support and growth from the indie retail side, for which we are so grateful. It’s been life-changing. Record stores and venues are places we longed to be during quarantine. We don’t take those spaces and the respite they provide for granted.

We’re huge fans of the new Soul Glo, Turnstile, SASAMI, serpentwithfeet, Orville Peck, Indigo De Souza, Sudan Archives, Boy Harsher, Charlotte Adigéry & Boris Pupul. Is there a genre that you would consider to be the label’s “signature style,” or is it a mix? Get Better Records doesn’t have a sound - we’ve got a feeling. And we hope to transcend genre and break down barriers and binaries that genre has often enforced. We are proud to work with artists who are grounded in who they are and their communities while also having the highest level of craft. Forget about the vinyl boom - how are you and your label responding to the ever-increasing popularity of cassette tapes? CDs?? GBR started with CDs and cassettes, and those formats have never left our rotation. In fact, we’ve seen a shift back towards those formats making physical music more accessible. Our team doesn’t just collect; we listen to cassettes and CDs and cherish them as much as vinyl. It’s important that vinyl not be a benchmark for legitimizing artists. All ways of listening to music are valid. How would you describe the average fan of the label? Our core audience is the LGBTQIA+ community, but it by no means stops there. We have so many listeners and accomplices of such diverse identities, which really speaks to the power of music to bring people together. We think that music has a more urgent role to play in society now more than ever. How important are issues like mental health and social justice to you and the label? Mental health is a social justice issue and, in turn, is an intersectional issue. Our values are our foundation, and we work very hard to bring intention and care in all the things we do, which may be too nuanced for the old industry. Everyone in music must challenge the old ways of working because the same oppression that takes place in society is reflected in every space of music. We never stop dreaming of a liberated world. We will never stop working towards it. They say our sun will explode in about 5 billion years or so- how would you like the label to be remembered? Get Better Records was a part of making music that was the soundtrack to the revolution, and they did it with joy.

RENATA ZEIGUER

PICNIC IN THE DARK

Renata Zeiguer's 'Picnic In The Dark' marries the romantic spirit of bossa nova with kaleidoscopic, self-reflective psych-pop “a multifaceted gem of an album that enchants as often as it haunts, Zeiguer has set a new bar” – Paste Magazine (8.0 Album Review) “Zeiguer triumphs on Picnic in the Dark” – Pitchfork (7.6 Album Review) “a personal fairytale to life” – Remezcla (Feature Interview) “dreamlike” – Stereogum “a carefully laid feast of confession and melodic rumination.” – Treblezine “each track is a little movie with its own distinct cinematography, its own genre-genome, its own denouement.” – Post-Trash “An incantation” – KCRW “psych-tinged dream-pop inflected with bossa nova, folk-pop and other styles” – KEXP

New York Times - "Veirs sounds fittingly reinvigorated and inspired on the lead single 'Winter Windows,' an antsy, guitar-driven meditation on motherhood and moving on.”

Laura Veirs’ releases what feels like a debut album with her first venture into production. Found Light is her very first record with coproduction credits (alongside Shahzad Ismaily), and finds Veirs embracing a self-sovereignty and artistic independence she’d never known previously. Lead single “Winter Windows,” replete with energetic, fuzzed-out guitars and driving percussion, is a showcase of this feminist liberation, freedom and strength. While 'Found Light' is technically the 12th studio LP from the esteemed Portland, OR-based artist, it also, in many ways, feels like her debut: 'Found Light' is her very first record with co-production credits (alongside Shahzad Ismaily), and finds Veirs embracing a self-sovereignty and artistic independence she’d never known previously. If 2020’s My Echo was Veirs’ divorce album, Found Light is about what comes after.

Veirs spent months doubting herself, doubting her ability to make an album without the aegis of her ex-partner. But after her divorce, she started writing, exercising, painting, playing, and seeing other people, both romantically and artistically. She was discovering new sides of herself, or even rediscovering ones she’d lost — in both cases, finding new light.

The Guardian – “A determined alt-rock reinvention from the Portland songwriter, tension building and guitar stinging.”

The Deslondes are a five-piece band from New Orleans. The band splits up songwriting and lead vocal duties among its five members, continuing its democratic ethos and musical versatility. Multiple members have released solo recordings between their sophomore release, Hurry Home (2016) and their latest release Ways & Means but throughout the time between albums the Deslondes continued to build on their inventive take on New Orleans country and R&B. Ways & Means finds the band leaning on the country-folk of their debut along with the sometimespsychedelic, electrified gospel-soul sound of Hurry Home. The sound will continue to draw comparisons to the country-funkiness of The Band, Link Wray and others but Ways & Means is the sound of a band that understands the history of American music, while embracing their own contemporary approach. OVERVIEW

FILE UNDER • W / ALTERNATIVE

Comprising of 12 tracks, Wu-Lu’s ‘LOGGERHEAD’ was built with his band at a West London pub and at The Betty Fjord Clinic in Norway. It’s laced with revvy, etherial guitars that warp and loom like electric pylons, concrete walls of bass that power out of drill-influenced, triplet-laced drums and piano melodies that pull you through. ‘LOGGERHEAD’ pulls from the past and reshapes it for now. Drawing on many streams of influence, it is music for the underrepresented, for those without a voice, and for those who struggle to break down barriers.

y 1962, when Arthur “Big Boy” Crudup belatedly released his debut album, he’d been recording for two full decades. His songs “That’s All Right (Mama)” and “My Baby Left Me” were part of the fresh approach that catapulted Elvis Presley to stardom, but Crudup had actually composed and released these titles during the 1940’s. By 1962 Crudup had retired from the music industry, due in part to frustration over lack of publishing royalties, but he made a strong comeback. Bobby Robinson’s Fire Records allowed him do an album on his own terms, and many feel the result represents some of the bestrecorded Crudup of all time. These sessions saw him revisiting his classic material, benefiting from improvements in recording technique and the artistically free atmosphere of the sessions. This collection also includes many additional sides from these sessions, not included on the original album.

Info: A mysterious object is revealed; the drum sound of the rite arouses; *ares are blazing; the soul slides through water’s surface; the breath lights up the air; the body as a sacri)ce, I hear myself, in this dream. The 12 songs that constitute Dreams, the third full-length from the Kaohsiung trio Elephant Gym, explore the deep spacetime continuum that consciousness cannot capture. Beyond the trio’s staple instrumentation of guitar, bass, and drumset, Dreams blends in wind instruments, traditional drums, and Taiwanese narrative. Through collaboration with Hakka singer-songwriter Lin Sheng Xiang and pop musician 9m88, notable for their accomplishments in jazz, soul, and R&B, Dreams is a sweeping narrative about a fantastical dream that crosses the boundary. After pressing play, please do close your eyes, and enjoy the dream.

TALKING THERAPY ENSEMBLE TALKING THERAPY EP

Talking Therapy Ensemble are something between free-jazz madness and groove, somehow between composition and improvisation, and exist somewhere between the public and the private. Through the cathartic process of improvisation they find a release of stress and suffering - their talking therapy inspired by the blues, crusty punk, the confessional poets of the 50s and 60s, and artists such as Art Ensemble of Chicago, Sun Ra Arkestra, Albert Ayler, and Irreversible Entanglements. Talking Therapy Ensemble is the latest project from composer, bandleader, multi-instrumentalist and producer, Emma-Jean Thackray, following 2021’s acclaimed debut album Yellow. 12” Black Vinyl, printed inner-sleeve. MUSH DOWN TOOLS STREET DATE: 8 July 2022 Leeds art-rock group Mush (Dan Hyndman - vocals / guitar, Phil Porter drums, Nick Grant - bass, Myles Kirk– guitar) are set to return with album ‘Down Tools’ on 8 July 2022 via Memphis Industries. The new record marks the prolific band’s third album in as many years, following hypebuilding early singles ‘Alternative Facts’ and ‘Gig Economy’, 2020’s debut LP ‘3D Routine’ and 2021's acclaimed ‘Lines Redacted’, which pushed their sound further and, as Uncut wrote, saw them become “kindred spirits to Wand and King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, two other bands prolifically honing their sound and approach, steadily developing their voice.”

On ‘Down Tools’, this voice grows again into a more brilliantly singular sound. It sees Mush getting loose, moving away from the defined moods and textures of ‘Lines Redacted’ with a musical openness, straddling genres while avoiding pastiche. Hyndman says of the lyrics on ‘Down Tools’ that “there was a conscious decision to retreat further from an observational approach” with vocals being ad-libbed lending the record a more abstract feel. Hyndman continues: “this album is less dark than the previous one. The Armageddon obsession has eased, or at least the symptoms have become milder due to saturation. Musically there’s a lot more chill on the record – there’s a few more mellow tracks out there and the most astute listener may even be able to decipher some of the words, fingers crossed.” While grief and work balance form themes on the record, Hyndman’s approach is largely made up of abstract, disconnected streams of consciousness and lines liberally taken from books, paintings, films and beyond. On ‘Human Resources’, Hyndman dramatically retells a battle he had with an HR department at a job in a David and Goliath style. The song ‘Group Of Death’, a phrase chillingly familiar to any football fan, is emblematic of the turn towards softer, more considered sounds. Hyndman says: “In my warped imagination it just sounds like a Paul McCartney song, but it won’t to others. I initially had the idea of doing a World Cup song called ‘Group of Death’, but by the time it was written nothing beyond the title had any relevance to football. Anyway, the next World Cup is in Qatar so fuck that shit.” Northern Safari meanwhile is a song about the way the North of England has been portrayed in the media and used as a mirror to reflect some of the nastier elements of what’s going on in society, in particular vox pops around Doncaster, portraying a particular narrative of the collapse of the red wall and the disgruntled ex-miners. ‘Down Tools’ then sees Mush idiosyncratically ping-pong from finger picked looseners to noise-rock bangers to brilliantly entertaining effect, avoiding post punk saturation with an easy style and wit.

Format: LP CD

Barcode: 7090039724995 7090039724988

OVERVIEW The Mid-Norwegian (Trondheim) six-piece Adventure spent most of 2020 and early parts of 2021 writing and recording new material. Various lockdowns had its impact, making it hard for the band to work together. While searching for issues to write lyrics about, a friend of the band suggested to write about Belle Gunness. And so they did… Belle Gunness, born Brynhild Paulsdatter Størset in 1859, grew in very poor conditions in the parish of Selbu near Trondheim. She emigrated to USA in 1881, and before vanishing in 1908 she became one of the worst serial killers the world has seen. Local expertise on Belle Gunness’ life was consulted in the process of writing the lyrics. TALES OF BELLE, PART 1 – ACROSS THE OCEAN features 11 of the songs written and recorded for this project. Thematically this album deals with Belle’s life in Norway, the emigration and settling down in Chicago. Musically, Adventure is still exploring the golden era of 70s symphonic hard rock, mixing in proggy and folky elements. The guitar and Hammond organ drive is still there, so is the multipart harmony vocals, and it’s all underpinned by a solid foundation of bass and drums. The second part of the duology is in the completing stages and will be released late 2022 / early 2023. LA-based experimental producer Al Lover releases his new studio album. A staple of the global psychedelic scene, Lover has spent nearly a decade fine-tuning a broken, abstracted form of electronica that pools together a tapestry of trip-hop, synthesised krautrock, dub and dark ambient. Central to Lover’s music is a desire to explore the fringes of psychedelic music and the common threads that run through its far-reaching styles, drawing elements from the past and connecting them to the future, ‘Cosmic Joke’ – a series of synthesised philosophical meditations on modern life, in all its tragicomic absurdity. "'Cosmic Joke' came from observing the rising, compounded absurdity in recent years and seeing structures of normalcy dissolving. It’s my attempt to view these things as part of a higher-order process, through a metaphysical lens rather than an ideological one. It’s been an exercise in holding the paradoxical relationship of comedy and tragedy, joy and pain, growth and decay, scale and decline as part of an interlocked system that, at a deep level, is essential to how we interface with the world.” 1) Stereoscopic View 2) Parallel Pathways 3) Cosmic Joke 4) Ultimate Reality (Question) 5) Integrated Paradox 6) Deep Time / Complex System 7) A Very Mechanized Dance 8) Experiential Feedback Loop 9) Corresponding Contradiction 10) Reverberative Relationship 11) Linear Return Cycle

BLOOD BYE BYE STREET DATE: 8 July 2022 Label : Permanent Creeps

Track listing A1 Money Worries A2 Luck B1 Borstal Field BLACK VINYL 10”: CAT NO: PCR055T UPC: 5056340104576

Bye Bye is a three track offering from Philadelphia based sextet Blood, that rarely stays put in one style for long. All three songs – first single Money Worries, Luck and Borstal Field - were recorded by the band throughout the pandemic providing a uniting force whilst touring remained impossible. The tracks are a testament to the unforgiving and rewarding process of self-recording. The band found great relief in finally having the time to flesh out an experimental atmosphere without the constraint of paid studio time. Blood is proud of the work they’ve made, but it is imperative to mention that all three tracks were brought to life in a way not formerly thought possible by the mixing brilliance of Nancy Conforti. Blood began as a solo project of current lead singer Tim O’Brien in the winter of 2017. After going through several line up changes throughout 2018, the current line up began making waves in the bijou punk scene of Austin. They were considered “a live staple in their own prospective scene” and “one of Austin's buzziest new acts” by press nationally and locally. After twice touring the U.S., Blood was poised for a big 2020 when plans were altered drastically by the pandemic. They then selfreleased their debut EP, Why Wait Til’ 55, We Might Not Even Be Alive, on April 11th of that year. In 2021, the sextet made a move to West Philadelphia and began recording their upcoming release, Bye Bye, while also playing shows throughout the Northeastern United States. At this time, the group lives in a seven bedroom house with a converted basement for recording and rehearsing.

If fate didn’t quite ordain the circumstances for Interpol’s seventh album, it was at least fortunate that the band had happily concluded their Marauder cycle on stage in front of 30 thousandodd Peruvian fans. Rather than be sent scrambling like so many other musicians on tour or promoting new music, when lockdown clamped in March 2020, Interpol quickly got into a productive mood.

Coming from a group whose early work was characterised by Polish knife-wielders and incarcerated serial killers, you might expect Interpol’s pandemic record to be an emotional tar pit — doubly so, given the presence of towering producer-engineer duo Flood and Moulder on the boards. But Banks felt the call to push in a “counterbalancing” direction, with paeans to mental resilience and the quiet power of going easy. “The nobility of the human spirit is to recover and rebound,” he says. “Yeah, I could focus on how fucked everything is, but I feel now is the time when being hopeful is necessary, and a still-believable emotion within what makes Interpol Interpol.”

black midi Hellfire

July 15th, 2022 PRESS

Pitchfork’s 25 Next List: The Artists Shaping Where Music Will Go From Here. “The band is obfuscatory and difficult, two welcome traits in a musical landscape increasingly defined by ease and accessibility. They are an oppositional force in a futile attempt to change the current of music. It will be a joy to watch them march into battle every time.” – Pitchfork “Black Midi’s music arrives, most of the time, as a structured barrage: dissonant riffs, shifting rhythms, darkly cryptic lyrics and textures that can whipsaw between clockwork intricacy and pulverizing noise.” — The New York Times

SELLING POINTS

Debut album Schlagenheim Mercury Prize nominated. The band’s first ever color LP variant Extensive US touring including a primetime Coachella slot (& livestream) and an upcoming Central Park SummerStage show, one week after album release. More US tour plans for Fall ’22.

On Monday, May 9th black midi announce their third album and second in two years, Hellfire, out on July 15th. Hellfire sees the London three piece at their most direct. Written in isolation in London in 2021 almost immediately after it’s predecessor Cavalcade - no band can quite build their own universe like black midi. Hellfire picks up right where Cavalcade left off. Where Schlagenheim was much more based on ‘jams’ and collaboration, Cavalcade a mixture of isolation and collaboration, Hellfire falls on the other side of the spectrum of working in isolation. Musically, Hellfire builds on the brutality and intensity of Schlagenheim while also drawing on the more melodic elements that weave through Cavalcade. Lead-singer Geordie says “If Cavalcade was a drama, Hellfire is like an epic action film,” that delves into overlapping themes of pain, loss and anguish.

SUPERORGANISM WORLD WIDE POP OVERVIEW When the first Superorganism music surfaced in 2017, the group’s in-your-face aesthetic — a post-everything mishmash of psychedelic indie pop and fizzy, funky electronica — quickly began to resonate with the likes of Frank Ocean, Vampire Weekend, Jehnny Beth, Gorillaz as well as finding them legions of fans across the world. Superorganism make their eagerly awaited return with news of their second album; entitled World Wide Pop, it is their first new music since 2018’s self-titled debut. Superorganism have mutated and are now based around the core of Orono, Harry, Tucan, B and Soul but World Wide Pop also brings in an international set of collaborators including Stephen Malkmus, CHAI, Pi Ja Ma, Dylan Cartlidge as well as legendary musician and actor Gen Hoshino.

Blasting back with thirteen tracks that strike a balance between artifice and earnestness, between sci-fi silliness and existential intensity, World Wide Pop is a showcase for Superorganism’s newly deepened understanding of each other’s interests and impulses, the kind of creative convergence you’d expect when online friends start spending time together IRL (their debut was completed before the whole band had ever been in the same room at the same time). PRAISE FOR SUPERORGANISM (2018)

“Orono Noguchi's voice is at one moment deep and dark, and later high and humorous. These are just a few of the many elements that won my heart, and added up to what was — for me — the most refreshing sound of the year.” NPR (best albums of 2018) “There is seriousness of purpose in the music, but what elevates Superorganism beyond sound experiment is the lead singer and lyricist, Orono, who writes arresting offhand verses that convey brutal depths in an unerringly sweet tone.” NEW YORK TIMES “Some of the most warped, exciting indie-pop of recent years has spilled from the East London commune housing most of Superorganism’s eight members.a mix of synthetic and organic, funny, weird, internet-fueled, self-aware and very tripped-out.” ROLLING STONE

TAMI NEILSON From being cradled as a baby in the arms of Roy Orbison, to performing a duet with Willie Nelson, you would think that Tami Neilson lived a country music fantasy life. However, in between these monumental occurrences, The Neilson Family Band, with Tami’s parents, and her two brothers, were having to busk in the streets of small-town Ontario in order to put food on the table, performing gospel concerts to prisoners, and roaring down the Trans-Canada Highway in an exploding RV on her way to open for Johnny Cash, which she managed to do, at 18 years old, in her pajamas. 2022 now brings Tami’s 5th album, Kingmaker. Recorded at Neil Finn’s Roundhead Studios, Kingmaker was born of the pandemic. A moment when women were struggling, disproportionately affected by furlough: a “she-cession" they called it. Women put their dreams and careers on hold to care for their families and homeschool children. They mobilized online and in the streets to bring awareness to domestic abuse and systemic inequalities. The songs of Kingmaker expose these systems, exploding patriarchal structures of the industry, society, and family. They shine a light on the misogyny and misconduct that pervades the music industry. Tami sings of the underestimation of women, of their strength, power, fierceness, and resilience in the face of structural, and cultural barriers to their full participation in society. At the centre of this feminist tapestry is Tami's life story. The song “King of Country Music” reveals her country music lineage: singing with Queen of Country music Kitty Wells at the age of 10, touring with her family, slipping demo tapes in laundry bags of stars. It's clear to see, the story of Tami Neilson is just now taking shape: from her humble beginnings and tireless work ethic, to success, on her own terms. Tami Neilson is using her voice to be a game changer, a cage shaker, a Kingmaker.

US RELEASE TOUR

ELF POWER ARTIFICIAL COUNTRYSIDES WORLDWIDE RELEASE DATE: JULY 15, 2022 Artificial Countrysides, the band’s 14th album in an almost 30 year career, centers around the gray zones where the natural world collides with the creeping encroachment of the digital realm, where the balance between real and simulated can shift from one minute to the next. “That title also describes the songwriting process, of world-building or creating an artificial landscape within a song,” explains singer and multi-instrumentalist Andrew Rieger. Rieger and his Elf Power bandmates — drummer Peter Alvanos and guitarist Dave Wrathgabar, with contributions from keyboard player Laura Carter — have created some of the band’s most expansive musical terrain yet. Along with a blend of fuzz-tone electric and layered acoustic guitars, Moog keyboards and lively drums, the group experimented with the sounds of marimba, Mellotron, harpsichord, synth bass and distorted drum machine loops, taking a try-it-and-see approach to recording in the studio. “I like the challenge of approaching it as a trial-and-error process, so we can spend more time and see what works and what doesn’t,” Rieger says. “We build the songs as we’re coming up with them, instead of rehearsing it to death and then recording it. I’ve always felt like that makes for more interesting music for us.”

Elf Power’s songs — a mix of Rieger’s strangely plaintive voice, sludgy ❝ guitars and an array of oddball instrumentation — have made the group one of the most idiosyncratic members of the Elephant 6 Collective” - NPR Music

JONAH TOLCHIN LAVA LAMP LP/CD STREET DATE: JULY 15, 2022 It’s a sense of freedom and endless possibility that defines Lava Lamp, Jonah Tolchin’s bold and adventurous new collection. Built around a series of loose, live-in-the-studio performances, the record is more sonically diverse than anything in Tolchin’s catalog, expanding on the folkblues style he’s become known for to incorporate elements of indie rock and grunge fueled by gritty electric guitars and a muscular rhythm section. The songs are raw and emotional, reckoning with alienation and escapism in a modern world defined by 24/7 stimulation, but there’s a buoyancy to them that belies their intensity, a mischievous playfulness that Tolchin credits in part to his new role as a stepfather. In that sense, Lava Lamp can be heard as the sound of Tolchin reconnecting with his own childhood, casting off the burdens of expectation and returning to a musical sandbox where the only limits are the bounds of his own imagination.

TWO THUNDERING SLABS OF THUMPERS FROM THE DUNWICH RECORDS CATALOG! Features the Shadows Of Knight, The Luv’d Ones, Things To Come, The Banshees, and absolutely no crumbs! Pressed on colored vinyl! Chicago was home to one of the most vibrant American rock ‘n’ roll scenes of the mid-sixties and the most prolific outlet for Chicago’s rockin’ teen sound between 1966-67 was Dunwich Records. From its very first commercial release, “Gloria” by the Shadows of Knight, to classics by the Del-Vetts, the Banshees, Saturday’s Children and Knaves (to name just a few), the label was, in retrospect, arguably the most consistent garage rock production house of its era. The label, with its cryptically named subsidiaries like Yuggoth Music, outrageously hip art department, and amazing roster of garage bands, was formed by three jazz buffs: Eddie Higgins, George Badonsky and Bill Traut. This 2LP collection features two sets of liner notes, one from Traut, and one from garage d’or Jeff Jarema!

ARTIST: THOMAS JEFFERSON SLAVE APARTMENTS TITLE: BAIT AND SWITCH CLEAR VINYL LP BOX LOT QUANTITY: 30 LP FILE UNDER: PUNK / ART ROCK DM-5611 UPC: 090771561114

Out of Columbus, Ohio, comes a raucous punk band sure to make your head spin! Thomas Jefferson Slave Apartments, a name sure to catch your eye (and hopefully make you squirm), was conjured up by Ron House after his departure from The Great Plains. Teaming up with guitarist Bob Petric (who sadly passed away in March 2021, though his blistering riffs won’t be soon forgotten), bassist Craig Dunson, and drummer Ted Hattemer, TJSA first performed at local Columbus haunt, Stache’s, after the opening band never showed. Quickly becoming residents of the underground punk scene, they were offered a recording contract by a new subsidiary of Rick Rubin’s American Recordings: Onion Records. Recorded at Magnetic Planet, Bait And Switch provides listeners with raw, unadulterated punk with only one goal in mind: to entertain themselves and their friends. Calling attention to America’s dark past, TJSA didn’t try to be palatable for a mainstream audience. Their spiky exterior and cynical attitude towards the rock ‘n’ roll industry kept their sound honest, gutsy, and unafraid to shine a light on injustice. The Thomas Jefferson Slave Apartments have a wit and snarl that make them pioneers of searing, no-frills rock ‘n’ roll. After the release of Bait And Switch, TJSA released several albums on independent labels, keeping their underground following alive. Waving their freak flags high, TJSA really shows their talent for the indomitable-spirited hard rock that, for any punk fan, is total ecstasy. First ever reissue, pressed on clear vinyl!

• FIRST EVER REISSUE OF THIS ‘95 PLATTER OF PUNK ANGST THAT MAGNET CALLED A “INCENDIARY NEAR-MASTERPIECE.” • CUT BY KEVIN GRAY AND PRESSED AT THIRD MAN PRESSING TO GIVE IT SOME EXTRA MIDWEST PUNK CRED. • NEW LINER NOTES BY ERICK BRADSHAW, HOST OF WFMU’S SPIN AGE BLASTERS WITH CREAMO COYL.

Thomas Jefferson Slave Apartments “singer” Ron House (formerly of Columbus, Ohio’s Great Plains) bellowed and wailed—even occasionally carrying a tune—on this razor-sharp-yet-unrefined debut LP from arguably Cowtown’s best band. Writing songs equally charged with humor and vitriol (“Blow it up before Steve Albini makes a speech,” he ranted on “RnR Hall Of Fame”), House, serving as a cantankerous Mick Jagger to guitarist Bob Petric’s surly Keith Richards, created an incendiary near-masterpiece.

THE PYRAMIDS – AOMAWA: THE 1970s RECORDINGS

Strut present the first box set release to bring together the 1970s recordings of The Pyramids, led by Idris Ackamoor. As students at Antioch College, Ohio, alto saxophonist Idris Ackamoor, flautist Margaux Simmons and bass player Kimathi Asante created three lasting monuments in sound – Lalibela, King of Kings, and Birth / Speed / Merging, a trio of albums produced without any label backing or distribution between 1972 and 1976. Their music is unique among the varied canon of avant-garde and experimental music of 1970s America: high intensity African-styled percussion topped with songs, chants, and horns, laced with African instruments and arranged into long, flowing suites that surge and roll. Jazz musicians in the US had long been consciously engaging with African sources, concepts, and instruments, and by the early 1970s, Africa was a central reference point for the music, both sonically and philosophically but, by 1973, relatively few prominent jazz musicians had spent any significant time in Africa. The Pyramids were almost alone among their musical generation in journeying to Africa to expressly absorb the sounds, cultures, places and spaces of the continent. During 1972-3, they embarked on an African trip of several months, to Morocco, Senegal, Ghana, Uganda, Kenya, Ethiopia and Egypt. The experience was both musically and personally transformative and remained a crucial touchstone for their own work. Their trip to Africa was made possible through the work-study program at Antioch College, where they had been taught by Cecil Taylor; all had been part of his Black Music Ensemble, Lalibela, King of Kings, and Birth / Speed / Merging were the remarkable fruits of their progressive education – spiritual unity in sound which remains as vibrant today as ever. ‘Aomawa: The 1970s Recordings’ features fully remastered editions of Lalibela, King of Kings, and Birth / Speed / Merging in their original artwork along with the first ever vinyl issue of their live session for KQED TV in 1975. The accompanying 12-page 12”-sized booklet features extended interviews with The Pyramids by Francis Gooding alongside previously unseen photos from the archive of Idris Ackamoor.

ARTIST: Arp ALBUM: New Pleasures STREET DATE: July 15, 2022 GENRE: Electronic FORMAT: Standard LP DESCRIPTION / BIO: Arp, a.k.a. Alexis Georgopoulos, makes his anticipated return to Mexican Summer with the second chapter in his ZEBRA trilogy. New Pleasures advances the narrative begun with 2018’s acclaimed ZEBRA; pastoral in mood, expansive in style, the record acted as a dawn on a nascent, Edenic landscape, reminiscent of a beautiful, long-lost Fourth World album. In this world, the music approximated the patient cadence of geological time – the way time suspends when you watch a river in motion. There was, nonetheless, the presence of something alien on the horizon. Now, Arp drops us deep into the grid of the city. New Pleasures fast-forwards a few centuries, locating listeners in a post-industrial Sprawl (to borrow an expression from William Gibson’s Neuromancer) of concrete and glass, imbuing the album with the flinty glow of commerce, the sleek rhythms of industrialization, and the cool finesse of brutalism. The result is a collection of futuristic pop interiors with glinted exteriors; a prismatic inquiry into machine sentience, the economy of desire, and myriad forms of possession – a dystopian response to ZEBRA’s idyllic naturalism. Canny and time-bending, Georgopoulos sculpts angularities into fresh, alluring shapes, expanding and contracting song form into brain-teasing sound design. The sensation the music offers is almost rubbery; it makes you feel as if you could flex, bend and squeeze your body inside out – a vivid, deconstructed take on high-definition pop, avant-garde, and dance music forms. By turns imaginative, cheeky, and energetic, it’s Arp’s most experimental and yet most alluringly accessible work to date.

Tiptoe between the toadstools of Liverpool’s city parks, and amongst the foliage you might find a Strawberry Guy, contemplating his next chordprogression. Composing hi-fi symphonies from within his humble abode, the Welsh-born songwriter is ready to share the fruits of his labour with debut album Sun Outside My Window. A timeless vista of ethereal balladry looking towards 19th Century musical maestros and works of art, it brings new meaning to the term ‘Modern Classic’ and is the most optimistic of lockdown records yet. “It’s about seeing the simple things in life and them making you happy,” tells Alex Stephens, the Guy behind the Strawberry. “I remember this day when I was really down… looking out the window, the sun beaming in was beautiful, it made me want to go outside – it was simple but made me so happy in that instance.” A one-man impressionist, painting majestic soundscapes, Strawberry Guy blends truthful lyrics with lush arrangements to conjure new emotive worlds. Inspired by composers of the Romantic period, or Debussy, Ravel, and other classical artists of the 1800s, his wonderland moves like a Monet painting where arpeggios dance between meadows of dazzling dynamics and dramatic key changes. As former keyboard player of The Orielles and Trudy and The Romance, the light through his floor to ceiling windows has caused a dramatic Greenhouse Effect and now ripening on solo terms, his innocent uploads of ‘Without You’ and ‘F-Song’ comfort 2 million Spotify listeners a month. ‘Mrs Magic’ has received 40 million streams, landing at #13 in its chart and countless fan-created videos have appeared on YouTube. “Throughout history composers have tried to capture emotion, painting their own impressionist pictures with musical brush strokes… I guess I’m just trying to do the same and people enjoy that,” he suggests modestly. Named by musical friends Her’s after his impeccable taste in milkshakes, Strawberry Guy upturns ‘bedroom artist’ perception, as each idea is crafted into a widescreen wonder where vocals tag-team instrumentals and countermelodies flourish within the Georgian walls of his Liverpool flat’s small space. “I want it to sound like I’ve squeezed an 80-piece orchestra into my room, and for listeners to wonder how all those strings got there,” he says. “Working on the 4-part harmonies, the orchestra became real; I began believing in myself.” Imitating nature’s effect on emotion, like 70s songwriters, or the fantastical soundtracks accompanying vibrant scenes in the Japanese animated Studio Ghibli films and video games, landscape is brought to the fore. Monet’s picturesque Meadow at Giverny features as the album’s accompanying artwork – perhaps a reminder of the rural Welsh countryside views through his childhood home’s window; “I was inspired by how calm and peaceful the image felt. Its painted lines show real-life scenes in a magical way, which to me reflects my music.” Just as the first Strawberry Guy EP Taking My Time To Be offered a slowing down for the soul, Sun Outside My Window is musically unhurried, written and recorded over 2 years. “Recording as a lone berry meant I could run with my emotions in the moment and deliver something true; it would have been an entirely different album had it been recorded in a studio,” he says. Modern Classic? Only time will tell. For now this Guy’s happy-sad world is here to get the juices flowing and with, pandemic permitting, a US tour in 2022, life looks a whole lot sweeter. Until then, take it slow, be at one with the wilderness and remember, when life gives you lemons, swap them for Strawberries.

Isotope 217 on Isotope 217: TRACK LISTING: “ It is hard to state exactly what this band is because of the diverse influences of the participants. One might say an eclectic avant funk ensemble dedicated to the Phonometric * system of universal thought. One might also say a freewheeling trans-moleculer unit dedicated to the betterment of all worlds.” 1. Kryptonite Smokes the Red Line *Note phonometrics are, as described by Satie, the Science of measuring sound.

2. Beneath the Undertow

The music of Isotope 217 is as complex and varied as the influences of it’s members. The following is 3. La Jeteé a short run down of the members of Isotope 217:

4. Phonometrics

John Herndon (drums, percussion) and Dan Bitney (drums, percussion) have been playing together 5. Prince Namor since 1990 when Dan joined Tortoise. Jeff Parker (Guitar) began playing with Herndon and Bitney in Tortoise live as early as 1995. Parker has played with Joshua Redman, Roy Hargrove, all the Marsalis’, 6. Audio Boxing Lisle Ellis, Charles Earland, Lester Bowie, Ed Wilkerson, Fred Anderson, Fred Hopkins, Famadou Don Maye and Malachi Favors to name a few. He is affiliated with Chicago’s AACM through his membership in Ernest Dawkins’ New Horizons Ensemble with whom he has recorded 4 albums and also logs time SALES POINTS in Tortoise, and the Chicago Underground Orchestra. Rob Mazurek’s (Cornet) early recordings owe a debt to Hard Bop, but his more recent work with the Chicago Underground Orchestra has “taken his playing towards the fringes with the assured muscle of Lee Morgan (which) pulses through Mazurek’s solos on more swinging material (while) the piquent phrasing of Don Cherry or the gorgeously abstract smears of Bill Dixon are just as likely to surface,” says Chicago Reader’s Peter Margasak. Sara P. Smith (Trombone) plays in the Chicago Underground Orchestra with Rob and Jeff and spent a few years at Berkely School of Music where Sara began playing with Jeff Parker in The Last Quartet. They have been working together off and on ever since. Smith still spends a considerable amount of time working on the west coast. She recorded with Viggo Martensen in a group with DJ Bone Break and Buckethead and has also recorded with Ralph Carney, Steve Hodges and Larry Taylor in a group “Henri” released on Action Box Records. Her live teeth were cut with the infamous soul man Sam Taylor Jr. Matt Lux (Bass) is a veteran of Chicago’s Funk scene and has played with numerous groups in Chicago, most notably Tranquility Bass. Though unfortunately without access to Chicago scene, the group names would be of no consequence as they were largely unrecorded. Matt’s imaginative variations and his flexibility are indespensible to Isotope 217, whose compositions flow directly from extended improvisational work. “Drawing from free jazz, hard bop, funk, dub and post-rock, without resulting in some featureless muddle or lifeless ‘fusion’, the group’s aesthethic simultaneously recalls different aspects of early 70s musical experimentation: The Art Ensemble of Chicago, Bitches Brew/On the Corner-era Miles Davis, and vintage King Tubby. Isotope 217 don’t merely assemble these diverse elements in one place, but rather explore the common ground that already underlies them: a shared emphasis on texture, timbre, space, and groove” - The Wire

Isotope 217 is an all-star line up of musicians, as described in Pitchfork “this five-piece boasts members from a slew of seminal bands”: Dan Bitney (Tortoise), John Herndon (Tortoise, Exploding Star Orchestra), and Jeff Parker (New Horizons Ensemble, Chicago Underground Orchestra, Tortosie) along with Rob Mazurek (Chicago Underground, Exploding Star Orchestra), and Matt Lux (Iron & Wine). “On Isotope 217’s impressive debut Mazurek works wonders alongside Sara P. Smith’s elastic, earthy trombone, adding particularly Cherry-like phrase fragments on “Beneath the Undertow” and laying slow tones over busy rhythms. Tortoise percussionists Dan Bitney and John Herndon weave together acoustic and synthetic rhythms while bassist Matt Lux holds steady. Parker is rarely in the spotlight, but his presence is huge-he lurks in the background, subtly coloring the proceedings, sneaking in a deadly wahwah groove on “Phonometrics”, the hardest-funkin’ cut” - Chicago Reader

“Though reference points like Daft Punk and Prince have rightly been thrown around, Radical Connector is in fact a strange album that doesn’t sound like much else.” - Pitchfork

*90377-ABDEBc

Mouse on Mars is recognised as one of Germany’s most defining and versatile electronic music projects. With their anarchic mixture of sound that oscillates between uncontrollable chaos and meticulously arranged structures, Jan St. Werner and Andi Toma have forged a unique musical language, which is readily decomposed by the unpredictability of its myriad mutations. Free from schools of thought, genre conventions, and from the constraints of the music establishment, they have worked under the Mouse on Mars alias for 24 years, mapping their own idiosyncratic trajectory through a no man’s land between pop, art, club music, and the avant-garde. - Jan Rohlf “Sexy robot vocals slip and slide all over juicy squeals, raindrop plops, and jungle-thick beats.” - Entertainment Weekly “Stirring songs drift out of its frantic aural mishmashes, finding a controlled center amid all the dizzy spin.” - AV Club “Mouse on Mars have a gift for making electronic bleeps and buzzes sound like tangible objects that bounce, bend and collide in physical space.” - Rolling Stone

On April 13th Mouse on Mars will release Dimensional People, their brand new studio album on Thrill Jockey. The album features Werner and Toma joined by a number of prolific guests: Justin Vernon (Bon Iver), Zach Condon (Beirut), Spank Rock, Aaron and Bryce Dessner (The National), Swamp Dogg, Eric D. Clarke, Lisa Hannigan, Amanda Blank, Sam Amidon, Ensemble Musikfabrik, and about 20 more musical collaborators. After a series of notorious dance floor releases, Dimensional People reveals them working deep within their own vernacular, digging into fertile terrain of their inexhaustible vault of digital and acoustic experimentation, and charismatically making elemental components new again. This album makes clear how their craft is of discovery, of finding new contexts for places, sounds, memories, sensations, ambiences, technologies, relationships, and of course, people.

Moonrising Styles Upon Styles / NYC

Alice Cohen’s new album Moonrising follows a long career in pop and rock music, beginning in the late 70s with the Philly Sound funk band Fun City, through the 80s in The Vels and the 90s with Die Monster Die. The aughts through now found Alice exploring more lo-fi, DIY electronic pop stylings, releasing solo albums with Olde English Spelling Bee and NNA Tapes. Moonrising is an album about grappling with loss, a kaleidoscope of dim-lit pop with dark guitars and gothic flourishes. Like her previous records, the homespun production is crafted from vintage synthesizers and drum machines, drawing from her backgrounds in new wave and grunge, and channeling a deeply-ingrained sense of groove. But on Moonrising, Cohen draws primarily from her days in the 90s rock scene, playing guitars and bass. In addition to working as a jazz pianist, Cohen’s father was also an engineer who helped develop equipment used in the Apollo 12 moon landing, so for Cohen, the moon strongly symbolizes her childhood. Each night after supper, they would look out the window. “We would watch the sun set, and the moon rise,” she recalls. Cohen’s filmic, dreamlike music is uniquely visual—a testament to her longtime work as a collagist and stop-motion animator, making material that feels tactile and timeless. She records at home, employing a unique approach to her Linn drum machine— the same machine she has used since the Vels. The drum machines are played by hand, rather than programmed; she plays each separate drum track live in real time, giving the records a uniquely organic feel. Moonrising also includes additional instrumentation added remotely by longtime collaborators Adrian Knight (vibraphone, keyboards and percussion) and David Lackner (clarinet, saxophone, flute and percussion). For Cohen, her albums are like time capsules. And with Moonrising, she has admittedly captured a rather difficult time in her life—giving voice to a type of perspective we don’t often hear in the ageist music industry. “This particular time period was dealing with the end of my childhood,” she observes. “My parents are gone. It’s a new era now. I’m on my own.”

PLANET MU RECORDS LTD. STREET DATE:

15th July 2022

BLACK VINYL LP: ZIQ439. UPC: 5055869566261

Isoviha was recorded four years ago, inspired by ideas that Sasu Ripatti (a.k.a. Vladislav Delay) had been reflecting on for a long time. This album is a counterpart to his two Rakka albums which were a personal reflection on the nature and sound-world of the northern Arctic wilderness, 1000 kilometres north of where he lives on the Finnish island of Hailuoto. It's an area he loves to explore, trekking out alone to enjoy its rugged power. However the sound world of Isoviha is a return to man-made civilization.

REDEYE WORLDWIDE 505 ENO STREET, HILLSBOROUGH NC 27278, USA redeyeworldwide.com 877.733.3931

Musically Isoviha presents a more complicated world than Rakka; overloaded and unpredictable, audio archaeology that layers and juxtaposes everyday sounds into intense sculptures of noise and drone. As a musical observation internally and externally, it's influenced by the heightened anxious intensity Sasu feels when returning from the empty wilderness. The ratcheting up of urban noise on Isoviha is built with insistent loops that seem to malfunction the faster they spiral and the dangerous overwhelming potential of ordinary objects and events: shimmering, hammering, crowds, radio distortion, ancient backfiring engines. It's hypermodern musique concrète, married to a jazz drummer's intuitive sense of rhythm. Going back even further in time but still tethered to the local, Isoviha also means 'the great wrath' and refers to a time in Finland under Russian occupation in the 1700s. A time when all the Islanders of Hailuoto were killed, apart from a single couple who were left to bury the dead. As if time is non-linear, the response to toxicity and madness that drives the album feels even more appropriate now than when it was written four years ago and confirmation that the horrors of the past still darken the present.

Friday July 15 2022 Piano/jazz/modern classical World ex. Europe

Black vinyl LP LP-BAYL-117 UPC 843190011711

Matthew Bourne follows 2017’s Isotach album, and recent collaborations with Keeley Forsyth and Nightports, with a collection of prepared piano pieces. Irrealis was recorded in a single session, each take played as live without any overdubs. Having taught himself the basics of prepared piano by throwing confectionary into his school’s instrument, elements of these experimentations played a key role in Bourne’s early performances. This culminated in an infamous performance piece which saw the explosive musical demolition of an upright piano with a sledgehammer. Far from the staid academic process the discipline is often approached with, Irrealis sees a restless improvisational musician explore the possibilities of his instrument with a box of nuts, bolts and Blu-Tak, and a sense of playfulness and spontaneity. Having prepared the piano for work on a lengthy job soundtracking a film, Bourne took the opportunity to use the set-up to let loose, before returning the piano to its original state. A few minutes into these improvisations, he decided to hit the record button. With no real idea what these pieces would add up to, we’re given a rare snapshot of Bourne playing for his own enjoyment his innate sense of melodicism shining through the percussive clatter and altered tunings.

NIGHTPORTS W/ TOM HERBERT NIGHTPORTS W/ TOM HERBERT street date: file under: territory:

Nightports is based on a simple but unbreakable rule of restriction: only sounds produced by the featured musician can be used. Nothing else. These sounds can be transformed, distorted, translated, processed and reprocessed, stretched, cut, ordered and reordered without limitation. Nightports w/ Tom Herbert is the third in a series of albums from musician-producers Adam Martin and Mark Slater to be released on The Leaf Label, following 2018’s Nightports w/ Matthew Bourne and 2020’s Nightports w/ Betamax. Tom Herbert made his name as the bass player in Mercury Music Prize-nominated bands Polar Bear and The Invisible, and has become an in-demand collaborator and session musician, including work with Adele, Lana Del Ray and most recently The Smile. Having honed his craft holding the low-end down in some of the most forward-thinking British groups of recent times, and also appearing on some the biggest tracks of the last twenty years, Nightports w/ Tom Herbert brings Herbert’s command of the double bass into the spotlight. As with all of Nightports’ work, the album rewards close listening. They stay true to their manifesto in maintaining the essence of the original recordings. The processing never masks the organic source material, at times demonstrating the physicality of the instrument with detailed recordings of complete takes - the sound of the room, the creaking of strings and Herbert’s measured breathing. At other times they build more abstract, atmospheric layers from the parts.

MARK DE CLIVE-LOWE & FREINDS FREEDOM - Celebrating the Music of Pharoah Sanders Electronic jazz pioneer, pianist, producer, re-mixer Mark de Clive-Lowe has an envious reputation as a cross genre creative artist who blends acoustic, electronic and world music exploring themes of belonging and identity. Equal parts jazz, house, hip hop and broken beat artist, Jazziz summed him up perfectly - "way before jazz hybridity became a worldwide phenomenon, de Clive-Lowe was busy designing its blueprint.” Freedom is a live concert recording made at the Blue Whale, Los Angeles where Mark put together a Los Angeles based collective made up by very accomplished and suitably talented Teodross Avery – saxophone, Corbin Jones - bass, souzaphone drummer Tommaso Cappellato Carlos Nino – percussion and the highly renowned spiritual jazz vocalist Dwight Trible. Reinterpreting a set of Pharoah Sanders highly respected music is not for the creatively timid, and Mark himself sets out the approach and philosophy this collective took when approaching this project: “This album is a celebration of the music, joy and spirit that the great master-teacher Pharoah Sanders brings to the world through his lifelong creative journey. We gathered at Los Angeles’ Blue Whale jazz club to perform some of our favorite Pharoah compositions from a place of love, respect and gratitude for all the inspiration he’s brought to each of us. No one can play this music how Pharoah plays it his expression is unique and imprinted on every one of his compositions in the deepest of ways. We can’t possibly improve on his mastery and share this music simply as a heartfelt thank you to Pharoah - we celebrate you, and are so grateful for all the timeless - and timely - music you have gifted to the world”. Across this 12 track album the unique approach of improvised jazz is embellished with MDCL’s tasteful and subtle touches of electronica played & triggered – from behind his array of equipment he reinvigorates and energises the music with a deft and tasteful approach and the interplay between the musicians including vocalist Dwight Trible is flawless and more akin to a extensively rehearsed studio recording than a live concert, such are the skills of all the players. The highlights are many and varied, from the delicate, sensitive Mansions World and Astral Travelling to the intense and rhythmically driven tracks OreSe-Rere and Teodross Avery’s spine tingling saxophone clarion call that opens the ever green ‘You’ve Got To Have Freedom’ is a beautiful tribute from one generation of master musicians to Pharoah – one of the greatest ever.

On Man On Man

Release date: 15th July 2022 On Man’s creative roots lie deep. An artist with a unique gift for sound design, he’s able to conjure perfect pop songs and then corrode them, revealing the emotional truths underneath. On Man’s eponymous debut album is his graduation point, a record framed by grief, the loss of identity, and the process of rediscovery. Challenging and rewarding in equal measure, it’s a revelatory listen. As leftfield as some of his sonic impulses are, the producer wants to sculpt something melodic and open. “I just love good pop songs!” he exclaims. “The simple ones about love are the ones I’ve connected with.” “Losing my mother changed the framework of those songs – A profound, engaging, and cathartic experience, On Man’s debut album works because it uses the cracks to let the light in; Collaboration is a huge strand within On Man’s work. If On Man’s world was broken by the solitary nature of grief, it was pieced together by the power of collaboration. Guests would drop by, gently pushing his music into fresh spaces; take the rap bars of F-M-M-F on ‘Squares And Triangles’ for example, or the incredible song writing talent of HAELOS’ Lottie Benardout. On a more subtle level, there’s the contributions of On Man’s Herts neighbour Phil Plested – a hugely successful songwriter who recently worked on Bastille’s No. 1 album ‘Give Me The Future’. “The story behind the album is very raw and personal, but it’s also been incredibly exhilarating, people will connect with this album. Mastered and cut by Matt Colton at Metropolis, London.

OVERVIEW

The scorching sun over Phoenix, Arizona, naturally leads to some dizzying psychedelic intensity, but it leaves its share of syrupy shadow as well. The city sits close enough to the glitz of Los Angeles to instead encourage the weirdos. For nearly a decade, Emby Alexander have sharpened their teeth in that rebellious scene, carving their own path through the desert. On Emby Alexander’s latest, SOARS ERA (due July 24th via Earth Libraries), the experimental psych pop band powerfully express that idiosyncratic outsiderdom in a way that simultaneously welcomes listeners into the fold. A native Phoenician, frontman Michael Alexander grew up in punk and garage bands, and utilizes that scrappy DIY mentality in music that stretches into ethereal majesty. The compositions of SOARS ERA similarly blend seeming opposites in their recording, utilizing taut technological instrumentation and loose human improvisation in equal doses. Drawing from the new wave and no wave traditions of bands like Joy Division, Talking Heads, and Suicide, Alexander and bandmates Kyle Grabski, Austin Harshman, and Jeremy Lentz then explode the results like fireworks in the night sky. Lead single “Dye It Gold” exemplifies that experimental ethos both in its composition and in its recording process. Alexander first wrote the song at a park picnic table under the big sky while on tour somewhere between Idaho and Montana, and sanded off the rough edges while on a friend’s roof in San Francisco--and the track appropriately reaches for the skies with its burnished guitar corkscrews and tightly knotted harmonies. When it came time to record, the band’s Spine Island studio provided the ramshackle immediacy needed to capture that magic. “We ran out of mic stands and taped the room mic to a TV,” Alexander recalls. The band jammed the space full of musical instruments, art, and film projectors so that they’d be ready to capture new ideas as quickly as possible. That willingness to reach ever further creatively is an essential element of the Emby Alexander process. “I think of it as leaving the mainland to swim toward an island that I’ve only dreamt about,” Alexander explains. On albums like 2019’s Cactus Candy, Emby Alexander have developed their own genre that embodies that exploratory attitude: tallwave. Combining relatively simple fundamental components into a large, complex recording, the band’s tallwave tunes reach a stunning apex subtly. Early single “You Can Do It” is a prime example on the band’s latest, building a Van Dykes Parks orchestral pop vibe using everything from a steely electric guitar to a half-filled bathtub used for percussion. “I was afraid I was going to slip in and electrocute myself, but everything went smoothly,” Alexander says. There is No One to Trust (Nyns Eus Denvydth Bys Trest)

Easy Action LP+CD EARS170LP 5060446073414 CD EARS170 5060446073421 Cornwall’s space/psych/folk-rock/post-punk cross-pollinators are back with a new studio album. Its Cornish title Nyns Eus Denvydth Bys Trest roughly translates as ‘There is no-one to trust’ – “With all the wacky things that have come out of people’s mouths over the past few years I think the title pretty much sums everything up” explains singer, guitarist, and songwriter Ben Harris. The creation of this album has been a breath of fresh air, a more organic experience allowing him to write from a more personal and immediate perspective. Displaying elements of Hawkwind’s sturm und drang spacerock and Psychedelic Furs’ sax-driven post-punk squall, opener ‘Always On’ finds the septet celebrating themselves, “‘Honeybees’ is us singing to the people that it's possibly time to stop voting for the same political parties and following the same failed systems,” he continues. “As far as I can see nothing's got better over the past year, or ten years or whatever, things just get slowly worse and people accept it. ”The song ‘Yeah’, which fuses Steeleye Span folk-rock melody and Sonic Youth chaos with spiralling psych guitar, has backing vocals which translate as “I am the same as you”, which Ben thinks is very important: “We're all the same and no-one is more important that anyone else”.
