Tanzanian History

Previous names include German East Africa, Trust Territory of Tanganyika, People's Republic of Zanzibar, United Republic of Tanganyika

In 1498, Portugal ruled Tanzania

In 1700, the Sultanate of Oman ruled Tanzania

In the mid 1800s, Christian missionaries, European travelers, and traders were all very active in Tanzania

Germany ruled Tanzania, Britain ruled Zanzibar. After World War 1, Germany lost control and Tanzania was ruled by Britain

In 1961, Tanzania gained independence and in 1963 Zanzibar gained independence.

Jeans or pants are acceptable for foreigners, if they are not formfitting

Entering Tanzania

You need a passport along with a visa to enter Tanzania, student visas are available (“Visa Guidelines”)

For a 6-month student research visa the cost is $300 (“Fees for Visa”)

Culture Customs

Tanzania is a very conservative country, please make sure that your clothing covers your shoulders and knees as to not be offensive

This is applicable to both men and women

Native women wear skirts

Foreigners do not necessarily need to do that, just make sure your clothes are not formfitting

Please be prepared to walk, there are several outdoor activities

Safety

There is a Level 2 travel advisory, exercise caution, that was issued in early October of 2022

In southern Tanzania there are terrorism threats

Carjacking, assault, and mugging are common

Increased risk for LGBTQIA+ travelers

Be aware of your surroundings

Avoid public displays of affection

Carry a copy of your visa and U.S. passport with you

Do not leave drinks or food items unattended
