Nissan's 1990s GT coupe, the Z32 300ZX, is a polarising machine. Lauded for its sporty looks, advanced technology and high-performance from the optional twin-turbo VG30 V6 engine, the 300ZX has also been accused of being bloated, overly complicated, prone to breakdowns, and difficult to work on. All 300ZXs are over 20 years of age now, and suffer reliability issues associated with old cars. Coupled with the fact they're renowned for being difficult to work on thanks to a cramped engine bay packed with complex wiring and plumbing, means they are not for novice mechanics.
I wouldn’t recommend doing it, as I doubt it would function the way it should. Airbags are configured for each vehicle and work in tandem with the body structure, so moving an airbag from one type of car to another quite different car with a different body structure wouldn’t be successful.
I CAN'T say for sure that the 350Z six-speed gearbox would fit, but I reckon it could be done. You need to consult a Nissan specialist, one who knows both cars intimately, and I doubt a Nissan dealer could or would help you in that regard. You could start by contacting Millen's company at www.stillen.com and asking them for advice.
THE 300 ZX was well-designed and built, which means it has stood up to the rigours of the road quite well. The V6 engine is sturdy and gives little trouble, but remember it is likely to have been driven hard over the years and could be suffering as a result. Major services at 100,000km intervals require cambelt changes, platinum-tipped plugs and other important items, so are expensive. Make sure they've been done. Gearboxes are rugged and give little trouble; wear in driveline joints and the centre bearing is common. Pay $17,000 to $18,000. For more information on the 300ZX it's worth checking with members of the Australian 300ZX Owners' Association or go to the website: www.aus300zx.com
