BRAND NEW and STILL SEALED!!!!

Archie Shepp's first major outing was recorded in August 1964 about a year before John Coltrane gathered some of these same players (Shepp and alto saxophonist John Tchicai) in the studio for the recording of Ascension, which would launch the final phase of his career, represented excellently on the two-CD Major Works collection. Shepp's recording was a reverential interpretation of four Coltrane compositions with one Shepp original. While it is a marvelous and insightful slice of jazz in 1964, it coheres and provides very rewarding listening now more than three decades later. Indeed its balance of "out" and "in" playing should provide a model for the new traditionalists in jazz. The arrangements for horns cast the Coltrane compositions in a new light (Roswell Rudd is a delight here on trombone). These are rich compositions played by players respectful of tradition and unafraid of creativity. --Michael Monhart

Every track is enlightening and amazing, particularly if you know the original material as performed by Coltrane, so you can better understand what Shepp and his band have done in this recording. If you're expecting to hear Coltrane or anything akin to him, it's not on this recording - these are entirely new and different interpretations of Coltrane's compositions. It's the music of Shepp and his band-mates, using Coltrane's material as a framework to showcase their own amazing talents.
There is no piano in this ensemble, but it's not missed due to the richness and depth of the horn arrangements and improvisations, along with the always beautiful bass work of the great Reggie Workman and the drumming of Charles Moffett.
My personal favorite is Naima, one of Coltrane's best known compositions. Shepp and company open up entirely new dimensions in this poignantly beautiful and eloquent ballad. Still, it's really hard to single out any one particular cut.
