BRAND NEW and STILL SEALED!!!!

Archie Shepp's first major outing was recorded in August 1964 about a year before John Coltrane gathered some of these same players (Shepp and alto saxophonist John Tchicai) in the studio for the recording of Ascension, which would launch the final phase of his career, represented excellently on the two-CD Major Works collection. Shepp's recording was a reverential interpretation of four Coltrane compositions with one Shepp original. While it is a marvelous and insightful slice of jazz in 1964, it coheres and provides very rewarding listening now more than three decades later. Indeed its balance of "out" and "in" playing should provide a model for the new traditionalists in jazz. The arrangements for horns cast the Coltrane compositions in a new light (Roswell Rudd is a delight here on trombone). These are rich compositions played by players respectful of tradition and unafraid of creativity. --Michael Monhart

This recording well documents the great creative energy and talent of the young avant-garde jazz musicians of the early/mid 60's, Shepp being among the best of breed.

Every track is enlightening and amazing, particularly if you know the original material as performed by Coltrane, so you can better understand what Shepp and his band have done in this recording. If you're expecting to hear Coltrane or anything akin to him, it's not on this recording - these are entirely new and different interpretations of Coltrane's compositions. It's the music of Shepp and his band-mates, using Coltrane's material as a framework to showcase their own amazing talents.

There is no piano in this ensemble, but it's not missed due to the richness and depth of the horn arrangements and improvisations, along with the always beautiful bass work of the great Reggie Workman and the drumming of Charles Moffett.

My personal favorite is Naima, one of Coltrane's best known compositions. Shepp and company open up entirely new dimensions in this poignantly beautiful and eloquent ballad. Still, it's really hard to single out any one particular cut.

Classic early Coltrane interpreted by Shepp. The musical palette has been expanded from the originals to bring new energy and harmony to the tunes. Shepp keeps the fire burning on the uptempo compositions and his tenor caresses the ballad Naima.

SUPER ITERPRETATIONS/EXTRAPOLATIONS BY MR SHEPP

I owned this title on a 33rpm album for years. It was stolen from me years ago. I found this cd and have been playing it quite often, none of the scratching sound that I use to hear on the album. I AM VERY PLEASED WITH IT.

Qualità delle grafiche inclassificabile, si vedono sia il retino tipografico che i pixel (!!!), testo quasi illeggibile. La musica ripaga ma dalla Impulse mi aspetto un prodotto complessivamente migliore.

3.0 out of 5 stars Un altro capolavoro stampato male 😂
Reviewed in Italy on September 22, 2016
