Fire Music: Archie Shepp and Beyond

Saxophonist Archie Shepp's 1965 Impulse! album Fire Music was a call to arms, ushering jazz into an era of intensely creative free improvisation. Shepp helped open jazz to black nationalism (one track was dedicated to Malcolm X) and psychedelic awareness. Contemporary and subsequent work by John Coltrane, Pharoah Sanders and Sonny Sharrock all carried the flame higher.
