Mar 30 – 100 Ton Gun Gets A Makeover

Gibraltar’s 100 Ton Gun recently received a makeover, courtesy of the Royal Corp of Signals.

A composite squadron of 11th Signal and West Midlands Brigade, deployed on Ex Tarik Patrol 17, conducted a civil engagement project to strip down and repaint the 100 Ton Gun, one of only two of the largest naval guns in the world. This is the first time the gun has been stripped down to bare metal and the task took up to 90 members of the squadron to complete.

The project involved over 2,800 man hours to remove four layers of thick paint, one day to apply the primer and 1,200 man hours to paint the gun. A total of 20 litres of red-oxide paint was used to prevent the metal from rusting and 60 litres of grey paint to complete the project.

The Squadron, including Regular, Reserve, Commonwealth and Gurkha soldiers, will shortly depart the Rock at the end of their deployment and return to the UK.

To mark the end of the project Dr John Cortes the Minister for Education, Heritage, Energy and Climate Change and Dr Liesl Torres, Chief Executive of the Department of the Environment will be invited to inspect the Gun and meet soldiers from the Squadron. The ceremony will be held at the 100 Ton Gun site on Friday 31 March at 12:00. The public are welcome to attend.
