Get to Know the 2022 American World Cup Team

As the U.S. team gears up to face the Netherlands, get to know the 26 Americans on the World Cup squad.

The U.S. Men's National Team (USMNT) is an underdog at this year's Men's World Cup in Qatar, yet they're an exciting group to cheer on. As coach Gregg Berhalter said in a statement, "We believe we have a talented group, a strong team spirit, and one that is ready to compete. We are extremely proud and honored to represent the United States and appreciate all the amazing support from our fans as we head to Qatar."

Here, as the USMNT gears up to take on Netherlands in the round of 16 in a must-win knockout game (they have to win to continue to advance), get to know the 26-man squad. They hail from just nine different states (and two foreign countries). There are five dads, one son of a current president, and the first ever player from Colorado to represent the U.S. at a Men's World Cup. All of them (except one) are on Instagram, and many play abroad in England, Germany, Italy, Spain, and elsewhere.

Brenden Aaronson

Hometown: Medford, New Jersey

Club team: Leeds United

Position: Midfielder

Fun fact: He is the second-most expensive American player of all time, with Leeds (in the Premier League) paying a reported $29.5 million earlier this year. His teammate, Christian Pulisic, is the most expensive: Pulisic had a $73 million move to Chelsea in 2019.

Kellyn Acosta

Club team: Los Angeles FC

Position: Midfielder

Fun fact: He was born to a Japanese father and a Puerto Rican mother, making him eligible to play for Japan or the USMNT.

Tyler Adams

Hometown: Wappingers Falls, New York

Club team: Leeds United

Position: Midfielder

Fun fact: He turned professional at age 16. His stepdad, Darryl, texts him at halftime at every single one of his games with his thoughts. According to a profile in The Athletic, "Tyler always reads those notes before going back out for the second half, Darryl said. On the rare occasions when Darryl doesn’t text — mostly when he’s watching in-stadium and cell reception is poor — Tyler can become visibly agitated."

Cameron Carter-Vickers

Hometown: Southend-on-Sea, England

Club team: Celtic

Position: Defender

Fun fact: His dad, Howard Carter, had a brief career in the NBA, before he moved to France and eventually ended up getting French citizenship to represent France in international competitions. His mom is from Essex, but met his dad in Greece, and he was raised in the UK and now plays in Scotland. However, he chose to represent the U.S. internationally.

Fun fact #2: He's the first player from a Scottish club named to a U.S. World Cup roster.

Position: Midfielder

Fun fact: His parents are both scientists; his mom, Anne Bang, is the Director of Stem Cell Biology at the Conrad Prebys Center for Chemical Genomics, and his dad, Juan De La Torre, is a professor in the Department of Immunology and Microbiology at Scripps.

Fun fact: Like some of his teammates, he has a very multicultural background. He was born in the Netherlands to a Dutch mom and a Surinamese-American dad.

Position: Forward

Fun fact: He moved to Dallas when he was 10 years old, when his dad, David Ferreira, signed with FC Dallas—the team Jesús now plays for.

Fun fact #2: In his free time, Ferreira he raises horses, chickens, goats, and alpacas on his farm; he is an aspiring zoologist.

Fun fact: He's the first person from Colorado to be named to a USMNT World Cup roster. There have been three Colorado natives on the USWNT: Mallory Pugh, Lindsey Horan, and April Heinrichs.

Fun fact: His parents are both Jamaican, and he holds American and Jamaican citizenship. Johnson played college soccer—he attended the University of Central Florida, but left early to enter the 2010 draft.

Fun fact: His parents, Wendell and Michelle Goddard-Moore, are from Trinidad and Tobago, and so Moore was eligible to play for the U.S. or the Caribbean nation. His dad, Wendell, played for the Trinidad national team, as did his uncle, Richard Goddard.

Position: Forward

Fun fact: He started a foundation, Jordan Morris Foundation, to support kids living with Type 1 Diabetes. Morris himself was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at age 9, and is one of few professional soccer players who have T1D. "I’m blessed to be given this platform. I would like to reach as many young people with diabetes as possible, in order to show them that T1D doesn’t have to keep them from achieving their dreams," he said.

Fun fact: He his wife, Kristen Sapienza, met while they both played soccer at Saint Louis University. They have three kids, and they take very cute family photos.

Fun fact #2: At just 35 years old, he's the oldest player on the squad, and the eighth oldest player ever named to a USMNT World Cup roster.

Hometown: Bedford, New York (born in Sunderland, England)

Club team: Borussia Dortmund

Position: Forward

Fun fact: He comes from a family of soccer stars. His dad, Claudio Reyna, earned 112 caps—international appearances—with the USMNT, and played in four different World Cups. Claudio was also captain of the USMNT at the 2002 and 2006 World Cups. He's considered one of the best USMNT players of all time. His mom, Danielle Egan, played for the USWNT, and won four national championships at the University of North Carolina with her teammate, Mia Hamm.

Alex, however, chose to play for El Salvador, and is on the El Salvador national football team.
