Echinocactus grusonii GOLDEN BARREL CACTUS
First described by Heinrich Hildmann in 1891 Echinocactus grusonii, the popular and common golden barrel cactus is considered rare and endangered in the wild. Its numbers were drastically reduced in 1994 due to the creation of the Zimapan Dam and resulting reservoir in central Mexico. They are believed to live as long as 30 years reaching heights of more than 3 feet. Small yellow flowers appear on its crest after about 20 years. |
