Savage 2 is a sequel to the award-winning, independetly developed Savage: The Battle For Newerth, which was released in 2004.
I'll try to sum up the gameplay, as best as I can. It's a multiplayer only game where two teams, of between 5 and 17 a side, battle between two bases, in a fantasy setting. There are two sides: Beasts and Humans. The game has RTS elements: you can develop your base, move siege engines and stuff like that; but there is a sort of RPG system how you upgrade your characters, and choose classes, stats and RPG-type stuff. You are able to battle with spells, melee weapons, or missile weapons.
One class that I thought was pretty neat was a peasant type that can build turrets, or shoot guns, in a FPS-type mode. There are also warriors, spellcasters, and other familiar classes from the fantasy milieu.
The game is free to play for 5 hours. After that, you can buy the game for $30, and play as much as you want (no subscription.) LAN play is also free. You can find the website here, and check out the trailer over here.
Update: Played this game for a while last night -- wanted to check it out.
The overall verdict: Its good. Worth getting the free download and checking out.
Probably the best way I can describe the game is to imagine that you were playing WarCraft 3 from the point-of-view of one of the units. For example, there is a low-level builder class you can play, which is pretty similar to a peasant in WarCraft: you can go around the RTS-style map and build buildings in first-person, or hack at people with an axe. The combat is fun, with pretty much all the units I checked out.
The game has elements of Tribes, and of the popular WarCraft mod Defense of the Ancients. You can purchase consumable items for your character -- like health potions and stuff like that -- and in the non-demo version of the game you can level up your units, and carry magic items between battles. You have unlimited respawns -- the match is over when your base gets wrecked. The three battles that I played lasted between 20 and 30 minutes.
There is also a bit of strategy to it as well. One player gets to play as the 'Commander', and plays the game much more RTS style (while everyone else is mostly first-person), deciding where to put buildings, and which gold mines to work on, and stuff like that.
If this sounds interesting to you, check it out. The demo version isn't that crippled -- you'll get a good sense of the game from it.
Savage 2 is a great deal better, and lot's of fun. Right now there are server lag/connection issues plaguing my fun with it. It's worth the 5 hour demo though.
