When I am called in to take over dysfunctional companies, one of the first things I do is conduct a survey to assess my employees' attitudes, like a doctor "taking the pulse" of the organization. These surveys are conducted by department, sometimes in shifts, to better discern problem areas. Even in the weakest companies, I always find areas where harmony prevails. When I review the surveys and obtain positive results in a particular area, I specifically investigate how that area operates. And the pattern is consistent: despite overall chaos, confusion, power politics, and dysfunction, I consistently find a leader who has taken charge of their sphere of influence, ensuring things work well there. As a psychiatrist, I approach this not as an auditor, but by identifying how emotions act as obstacles in every sector, from the freight department to upper management. 🏹 Grit, “Charrua”, and the priorities of an effective leader Recently, I read an interview with Greg McKeown, author of Essentialism, in the Brazilian journal Valor Econômico. In the interview, the author explained a little more about his new research: interpersonal essentialism. "One of the most essential things in life is relationships, the ability to connect with people and understand what is important to them," he told the newspaper. For him, the ideal leader is present and can listen, not pretending to have a conversation. To me, a leader must have three priorities to be successful: culture, talent, and sustainable growth. 🔐 CULTURE: A company's culture is not just a set of values, but an intangible asset of an organization, which will guide all employees by a set of ways of acting. As an intangible asset, culture is something very difficult to copy, unlike a tangible one, such as products. I believe that culture is essential to the business's success and the leader is responsible for its creation and continuity. 🔐 SELECT TALENTS IN A COLLABORATIVE ENVIRONMENT: From my point of view, bringing together the best talents is the first step. The leader's real job is to develop the potential of his team, as well as create an environment where these talents can work together. Many leaders fail in this process, allowing rivalries and egos to undermine collective potential. Exceptional leaders are those who cultivate collaboration and ensure the mental well-being of their teams. 🔐 SUSTAINABLE GROWTH: We live in a hypercapitalist world that seeks continuous growth. People yearn for opportunities, quality of life, and economic progress. In Brazil, where there's much disparity between classes and lots of different needs, leadership has to be one step ahead. What I mean by that is: leaders need to recognize each person's and the team's achievements, but never settle, stretching the rope and visualizing new opportunities for organic and inorganic growth, without creating a hostile environment. Not an easy task. Leaders often find themselves lonely in their positions, but not being complacent is fundamental to reaching success. At the base of all this, like a cement that solidifies all these pillars, I see one element: GRIT. To me, grit is an essential skill for all leaders and individuals. It's the resilience that drives us to face the unknown, overcome obstacles, and maintain hope, even when the odds are small. Grit is not giving up, is the element that determines the success or defeat of a leader and, above all, of a person. Do you agree? As leaders, it's important to recognize the danger of a single story. We all have narratives we've developed about individuals or cultures, but what if those stories are wrong? How badly are we misunderstanding them? And, most importantly, is our story limiting their potential for growth? Reflecting on this is crucial. We're all influenced by what we see, read, and hear, which can lead to unintentional assumptions. If you think you may believe a single story about someone or a culture, start an authentic dialogue with them as soon as possible. Truly listen and make room for the story you tell yourself to expand. Challenge yourself to reflect on the narratives you've developed. As leaders, we must face these stories head-on and work to understand those around us. Let's create a culture of open dialogue and growth.
