Selena Gomez's January is off to an exciting start. The 30-year old actress began her 2023 on holiday in Mexico with close friend Nicola Peltz-Beckham (in matching Valentino dresses, no less), before attending the Golden Globes as a nominee for her role in Only Murders in the Building – and delivered some memorable videos on TikTok in-between.

One video in particular shows Gomez going through her skincare routine, which featured some surprising takeaways. In the post, Gomez started her regime by using La Mer's The Concentrate to take off her make-up, a move that caused some eyebrow raises with her younger fans, given that it's an ultra-luxe product (it starts at £165 and is packed with the brand's signature Miracle Broth, a blend that helps with redness, dullness and hydration).

Gomez herself agrees that this is possibly the most luxurious way to cleanse, writing in her caption: "PSA I got most of these products free. I ain't just rolling like that everywhere. Use any serum to take off make-up before washing. It breaks it up nicely."

But it's the next product which is particularly interesting: she follows up for a more thorough cleanse using Bioderma Micellar Water on a flannel to remove her foundation and cheek products. Once a niche French pharmacy buy, Bioderma is now widely available, and you'd be hard-pressed to find a make-up artist without at least one bottle in their arsenal. It's kind on almost every skin type, especially those that are delicate and prone to dryness, and is pleasingly affordable.

And if your eye area is feeling especially sensitive, Gomez' next step will come in handy. Soak a soft beauty blender with some micellar water, and gently pad away your eyeliner and mascara. The bouncy nature of a sponge will feel that much better on the skin than a potentially scratchy cleansing cloth, or simply look for an extra plush reusable cotton pad (Garnier has some excellent ones).

While it's rare to see anyone use a serum as a first step, it's certainly a luxe way to start your cleansing process. Seeing as everyone's skin reacts differently to products, who are we to judge Gomez's less-than-conventional routine? If it feels good, go for it, we say.
