Pilea peperomioides
  • Pilea peperomioides Diels is an erect, evergreen perennial plant, with shiny, dark green, peltate circular leaves on long petioles.

Native to Yunnan Province in southern China, it was introduced into wider circulation by a Norwegian Missionary in 1946, who shared the basal shoots with his friends in Norway where it is still referred to as the ‘Missionary plant’. Pilea peperomioides is an example of a plant that has been spread amongst amateur gardeners via cuttings, without being well-known to western botanists until the late 20th century. This led to the plant earning the nickname of “friendship plant”, or “pass-along plant”.

The genus name Pilea is Latin for "felt cap", a reference to the calyx covering the achene.
