JOHN MAHONEY’S death reached Frasier fans last night following his tragic passing on Sunday, and comes almost three years to the day since his final ever television appearance.

John Mahoney appears in an episode of Foyles War

The TV legend, who played Martin Crane in the hit comedy between 1993 and 2004, died in Chicago, his managed confirmed.

To most the star will forever be Niles and Frasier’s cantankerous father, however he continued acting long after the sitcom came to an end.

However, John’s last part was in ITV period drama Foyle's War, when he stared as Andrew Del Mar in an episode titled High Castle.

The gripping instalment aired back in January 2015 and saw Michael Kitchen’s alter ego drawn into the world of corrupt Nazi businessmen.

He got involved after London University professor William Knowles (John Waterhouse) was found brutally murdered in a park.

When it transpires that he was actually working at the Nuremberg trials, Foyle realises that there are powerful people trying to conceal secrets from the war.

John’s guest part saw him portray an American businessman who profited during the war years.

"It was just one of those lucky things," he previously said of landing the role. "My agent called and said, `They want you for something called Foyle's War. Are you familiar with that?'"

John went on: “[Marty Crane] was a very decent man, an honest man. What I'm playing here is not.

“I’m not nice to Honeysuckle [Weeks] in the scenes I have with her. I'm rotten to my son in the scenes I have with him.”

While he was shooting the show, producers reportedly put him up in Manchester instead of nearer the location in Blackpool so he could visit family members living there.

He had previously lived in the northern city after evacuating from the seaside town, before emigrating to the US.

Before Foyle’s War, John was regular in Hot in Cleveland as Roy “Rusty” Banks, between 2011 and 2014.

He also appeared in Burn Notice, In Treatment and long-running show ER, as Bennett Cray.

Among the tributes paid to John online, actress Peri Gilpin - who appeared alongside him throughout Fasier's 263 episodes - tweeted a picture of him singing at her wedding.

She wrote: “Watch Moonstruck, Say Anything and/or Frasier or anything you can with him in it and raise a glass to John. Remember him well."
