John Mahoney, the actor best known for his role as Martin Crane in the sitcom Frasier, died Sunday in Chicago, according to TMZ.

His publicist reportedly confirmed the star's passing. He was 77 years old and in hospice care. Besides playing Kelsey Grammer's dear old dad for 11 full seasons, Mahoney also appeared in the TV series Hot in Cleveland and Foyle's War, the films American President, Say Anything..., and Eight Men Out—as well as a variety of TV movies.

"I'm very proud to have Frasier as my television legacy," Mahoney told The Columbus Dispatch in 2014. "I’ve done a lot of good television myself. But, still, I think nothing can quite compare to Frasier."

Born in England, Mahoney emigrated to the U.S. at the age of 19. In 1986, he earned a Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Play for his work in The House of Blue Leaves.
