Overview

A medium sized, deciduous tree with yellow fruit and stunning foliage in the autumn.

Description
This attractive, medium sized deciduous tree, has a light and airy crown. The pinnately compound leaves, green at emergence and through the summer, turn shades of orange, purple and red in the autumn. Clusters of small white flowers give way to yellow fruit that hangs in bunches and is favoured by birds seeking food as summer comes to an end although, they often prefer a red fruiting Mountain ash over this particular variety. The tree can be expected to achieve between 8-12m in height over a period of 20-50 years, with a spread of approximately 6m.

Planting Position
As a medium sized tree some consideration is required prior to planting. The Joseph Rock would certainly be suitable for medium and large sized garden, or urban planting schemes, although fruit fall needs to be a consideration when planting adjacent to footpaths or highways. It could however be incorporated into a small garden as a feature tree, if space permits, given the airy and delicate quality of its crown. This tree will tolerate full sun or partial shade, and any planting aspect. It also copes well in sheltered or exposed settings. Its soil preference is loam, sand or clay with either an acidic or neutral pH.

Attributes
The main attributes of this tree are amenity and wildlife. Mountain ash are a beautiful genus and this variety makes a striking specimen with pendulous fruit clusters and stunning autumnal colouring. It also provides food and habitat for a wide variety of insects and birds.
