NOT SQUIRREL-PROOF AS ADVERTISED!
I have had an ongoing battle with clever squirrels for some time now. They've been able to figure out how to raid most styles of bird feeders that I've had. Many that were advertised as squirrel proof were not. Sadly, this SAMHE metal bird feeder was no exception. First of all, the birds don't seem to like it much, though they will eat from it, they favor some of my other ones instead. The two sided, two-sized meshed areas should have worked better. No matter what size the seeds, they initially pour out of the bottom so you have to keep trying to fill up the compartments at least midway . Wasteful. The seeds that do stay inside seem overly difficult for the smaller birds to get out. The annoying grackles and starlings don't mind aggressively attacking the food. Their heavier bodies rock the feeder enough that they cause the remaining seeds to "come to mama", so to speak. And now for the squirrels. The roof/lid of this feeder is not a tight fit at all. In fact, there is no ridge or anything to keep it in place. The baffle design isn't big enough to discourage climbing. I don't know if the intent was to frustrate the critters by it moving around so easily or what, but so far, these tree rats have been able to shove the roof aside and reach in for the seeds with their paws, or even partially get their heads in, if I fill up. As with the large birds, merely pushing or swinging the feeder makes the food easily accessible. I suppose I could buy a larger baffle to hang over the top, or a wraparound cage to keep unwanted pests away so the little birds can eat, but I thought this little gadget was going to do the trick. Nope.
