On the Up and Up

Gabrielle Union Isn't Lying When She Calls Her High, Curly Ponytail "a Whole Experience"

Like so many celebrities — Ariana Grande and Jennifer Lopez come to mind — Gabrielle Union loves a high, straight, sleek ponytail. Remember her incredible look for the Versace show during Milan Fashion Week last September? Truly the quintessential elevated pony — what you'd see in the dictionary next to “high ponytail” if “high ponytail” was in the dictionary. But Union just proved that a high ponytail doesn't have to be sleek and straight to be perfect.

Union posted a carousel of videos and photos to Instagram on Wednesday, January 17, showing that she was enjoying herself in Miami, where her birthday-celebrating husband, Dwyane Wade, was recently surprised with the announcement that he'll be getting a statue commemorating his iconic career with the Heat. But it was Union who was looking statuesque in a wispy, fire-engine-red halter dress that fits right in with the Miami vibes.

Also true to Miami: Union's curls. And by that, I mean that when hairstylist Wankaya Hinkson embraced the city's infamous humidity instead of fighting it. The ponytail, which was flawlessly smooth at the base, explodes into fluffy, fabulous curls that both the wind and Union herself loved to play with — in nearly half of the photos she posted to her grid and Stories, she's understandably touching the soft style.

“Not a mood more like a whole experience,” she wrote in the caption of the grid post, and fans clearly agree with the sentiment. “She’s literally a Barbie doll LIKE WHATTT😍,” one wrote in the comments, while another said, “This is giving maaaaaain character enerrrrgy!!!!!! 🔥❤️😍”

Honestly, her ponytail alone — and those life-giving curls — have main character energy. But this is Gabrielle Union we're talking about. She has more main character energy in her little finger than most people do in their entire bodies.
