  • Common name: Tea tree, Narrow-leaved tea tree or paperback, Snow-in-Summer 
  • Family: Myrtle 
  • Seed: The tiny seed capsule is approximately 3 mm wide and full of minuscule seeds
  • Flower: Beautiful display of flower spikes – White to cream colour – Spring to summer
  • Bark: Pale-coloured/papery – ‘paperbark’
  • Foliage: Evergreen, dark green
  • Soil: Free-draining soil
  • Keep soil moist if grown in a pot, and move to a warm position if conditions become cooler
  • Drought tolerant
  • Relatively frost tolerant but prefers full sun and warm conditions
  • Up to 60 000 seeds per gram. Approx 3 scoops per gram. 
  • Depending on growing conditions, they can grow up to 10 metres tall. Likes to grow near freshwater
  • Medical properties: The oil is extracted commercially from the leaves to treat medical conditions and is used in many household products for its antibacterial/anti-fungal properties. The oil from the leaves was used for medicinal purposes by the Aboriginal people of Australia to treat wounds, sore throats, respiratory conditions and skin ailments. Toxic if taken internally. Germination method

  • Soak the seeds for 24 hours to soften the outer seed coat
  • Plant lightly on the surface of a seed-raising mix with sand and keep in a warm position. 
  • Keep moist with light sprays of water. Can cover seedling trays in glad-wrap to trap in moister and heat
  • Divide seedlings into larger pots after 3 weeks until they are large enough to plant out at approximately 6 months of growth
  • Fertilise with a native organic fertiliser and water regularly until established (Trees are drought tolerant but will thrive if the soil is kept moist, watered regularly or grown near water)
