Here is your Robert Lewandowski clickbait

Robert Lewandowski has two years left on his contract at Bayern Munich. For most other strikers about to turn 33, that would pretty much signal at least the start of the natural fading out process at the end of a long and successful career.

But Lewandowski literally just had the most prolific season of his career, scoring 40 league goals for the first time (41 in just 29(!!!) Bundesliga appearances to be exact). And the season before that was what is now the second most prolific season of his career (34 in 31 in the league and 55 in 47 in all competitions)! This is precisely the opposite trajectory he’s supposed to be on!

Certainly not a bad position of strength from which to negotiate a new deal — be that at Bayern or wherever else. Unfortunately, part of that process is the constant churn of silly rumors linking him with Chelsea or Real Madrid or any one of less than a handful teams who might actually be able to finance a £50m+ deal, with wages to match.

But at the same time, Bayern are under no real pressure to sell, especially considering that they got him for free from Dortmund back in the day, which remains the crime of the football century. Lewandowski himself seems perfectly fine to stay, and letting his agent do his agenting in the background.

And even if we were to believe that Chelsea might do something outrageous in the remaining month and change of this transfer window, it’s much more likely to involve shattering our transfer record and wage structure for Erling Haaland, as highly unlikely as that itself may be. That at least would be much more in line with our current transfer market m.o. of spending big on talent at the start of their careers, rather than at the end.
