John Mahoney may not be back for the Frasier revival, but he’s not forgotten, either.
Thursday’s premiere paid tribute to the late actor, who played Frasier’s dad Martin Crane on the original Frasier and passed away in 2018, with a short but sweet video clip that played before the episode’s end credits. In the clip, Mahoney, as Martin, smiles warmly and says, “It all works out,” with text on the screen that reads: “And John Mahoney: 1940-2018.”
(The episode was also dedicated to the memory of Gabrielle James, a longtime script supervisor for Cheers and the original Frasier, and Archie Lyndhurst, the actor son of Frasier co-star Nicholas Lyndhurst who died in 2020 at the age of 19.)
Mahoney’s character Martin was a key plot point in the premiere as well: Frasier had just flown back from his father’s funeral in Seattle, which his own son Freddy didn’t attend, leading to some friction between father and son. Ultimately, Freddy revealed how close he and Martin actually were, and Frasier presented him with a framed American flag that was flown in honor of Martin’s service as a police officer. (Read our full recap here.)
The revival also included another sly tribute to Mahoney. The name of the Boston bar where Frasier and his Harvard friends hang out? Mahoney’s.
Kelsey Grammer returns as Frasier Crane in the revival, but the rest of the original cast did not return. However, Peri Gilpin, who played Frasier’s radio producer Roz, and Bebe Neuwirth, who played Frasier’s ex-wife Lilith dating back to the days of Cheers, are slated to make guest appearances later this season.

The tribute to Martin Crane (and John Mahoney) at the end of episode 1 was very moving. The new Frasier was worth the watch.
This is one of the best reboots ive seen! entertaining with alot of heart. Hope it stays on longer than most streaming shows!
I saw the first two episodes, the writing is predictable. I know the jokes before the punchlines are read.
A better memory for Martin would have been having Martin leave his chair to Freddie in his will. That way, in each episode, there would be a remembrance of Martin by having his chair in Frasier’s apartment.
Wasn’t it thrown out & replaced in the OG series finale?
I don’t know. I do remember it catching on fire and falling to the street below from Frasier’s apartment. Frasier then had a duplicate made. I don’t know what happened to the chair after that.
No, it was moved to Martin and Ronee’s place after they got married and Martin moved out.
David is going to be the breakout star of this show. Best reboot I’ve seen in a while.
That, combined with Frasier and Freddie’s talk at the end of the first episode, really got to me. A lovely, moving way to pay tribute to John Mahoney, and to Martin Crane.
Frazier was a very popular show first time around. I’m not sure it will be the same this time. As a spin-off from Cheers, its first episode had over 22 million viewers. It continued to be very popular for most of its 11 season run. The final season averaged 9-10 million viewers and was ranked #38 in the year-end ratings
What happens to Ronnie, Martin’s wife in the new season of Frasier?
Great start to the new show. Frasier is now Martin though he owns the apartment building. His son is embarrassed by Frasier and hides the fact that they are father and son. I think now that we have the foundation the story can become independent and hopefully original.
Loved seeing Frasier back in actions ! Loved John Mahoney’s tribute. I do not like his apartment. It is gawdy !! I ,also, do not like David’s character. Trying to make him like Niles is not working !! Put a suit on him !!!
I liked it a lot and am looking forward to future episodes.
I ENJOYED THE NEW SHOW.
I WISH SOME OF THE OLD CHARACTERS WERE THERE. BUT FRASIER DOES A GREAT JOB WE WILL SEE IT IS PRETTY FUNNY MISS DAPHNE THROUGH IT ALL SHE COULD BRING A LOT OF LAUGHS TOO.
Oh and that tribute touched my heart ❤ I loved it.
