What is Sundaville®?

Get ready to embrace this long-flowering summer garden staple, which is celebrating its 20-year anniversary this year!

 

 

Sundaville® is a head-turning brand of mandevilla. Native to the Southwestern United States, Mexico, Central America, the West Indies, and South America, the mandevilla genus was named after Henry Mandeville (1773-1861), a British diplomat and gardener. It’s got a long history as a popular, easy-care flowering plant, but Sundaville® is taking the genus to new heights.

While Sundaville® and mandevilla are often mistakenly used interchangeably, it’s important to note that every Sundaville® is a mandevilla – but not every mandevilla is a Sundaville®! There are a couple of traits that make this brand very distinctive…

Giant flowers

While mandevilla are known for their eye-catching flowers, the blooms of a Sundaville® are both profuse and large in size, making a huge impact in any location in the garden.

Cold climate friendly

Mandevilla is native to tropical and subtropical regions, meaning that most varieties are unsuitable for colder climates. However, Sundaville® is an all-round winner in the climate department, being rain-resistant, sun-resistant and suitable for Northern European and even Scandinavian climates.

With Sundaville®, you get all the benefits of a mandevilla plant with the assurance of the trusted Sundaville® brand. Mandevillas are notable for:

Sundaville®: The brand behind the plants

Sundaville® was researched and developed by Japanese breeder Suntory Flowers Ltd, who passionately carry out research and development to create plants that consumers will go mad for. They’re conscious of trends, while keeping to strict standards of quality. Suntory is always on the lookout for new and improved colours, shapes and bigger sizes!

Once developed, the plants are then handed over to The Netherlands based MNP / Suntory, the (EAME) lincensor that specialises in marketing and deciding which plants will conquer the European market. They test, test, and then test some more before allowing the plants to be marketed, which is how you know that you’re getting great quality when purchasing Sundaville®.

When it comes to the growers of Sundaville®, they do all that they can to grow the most beautiful and strongest plants. The cultivation process takes around nine months, and can be customised to the grower’s specific niche, especially when it comes to shape and application (i.e. hanging, bush form, etc.).

How can Sundaville® be used in the garden?

Sundaville® plants are best purchased from April to July, and should be planted out straight away in a sunny position. Here are the ways in which you can use Sundaville®:

 

Bedding plant

Brighten your beds and borders with beautiful Sundaville®. Plant them against an obelisk or other plant support so that they can bring vertical interest to your garden.

 

Hanging baskets

Let the foliage and flowers of Sundaville® spill over the sides of your hanging baskets, creating an abundant display like no other.

 

Balcony box

Spruce up your balcony with plenty of colour and greenery! The trumpet-like blooms of Sundaville® are sure to catch attention from all directions.

 

Patio plant

Sundaville® is well suited to patio containers, and will happily grow in a pot by itself, or trail up plant supports.

Sundaville®: The varieties and colours

 

There isn’t just one variety of Sundaville®. Gardeners can choose from a range of series, each with different perks. Here are three of my favourite:

Fashion

This chic collection consists of super early flowering and compact growing mandevilla. 

Compact garden? No problem. The plants in this series are perfectly suited to small pots, and can be grown with or without a support. 

Grand

Go big with the Grand range! This is a series of mandevilla hybrids with exceptionally large blooms. Because of its tropical appeal, floriforousness and water economy, you can grow this range in your garden throughout the summer with minimal work. Grow these varieties on a trellis, in hanging baskets or in 12 cm pots. They are also very suitable for use in landscaping projects.

Up

A more delicate looking collection of plants, the Up series has elegant 7cm star-shaped flowers and long and thin oval leaves. It blooms very early, has good branching and a strong upward growth habit. 

These plants are suitable for small pots with minimal support, but its branches can be trained in a spiral through plant supports when grown in bigger pots. This variety is a real food lover and therefore requires slightly more feeding than its counterparts.
