There are several factors that play into your ammo’s longevity

Figuring out the shelf life of your ammunition is subjective. Storing ammo under ideal conditions means your ammo could potentially last longer than you. Conditions like moisture, heat, and sun exposure need to be taken into consideration. Your ammo will last a lot longer is stored in dark, cool, and dry places. Using a vacuum sealed, humidity controlled containment system will allow your ammunition to be stored indefinitely.

Shelf life under basic conditions varies

As long as the most basic conditions are met, your ammunition will still be good for years. So long as you avoid excessive heat or any amount of moisture, ammunition manufactures say their ammo should last for a decade.

Depending on what kind of shooter you are will also affect your ammo’s longevity. A hunter deals with any number conditions that will shorten the lifespan of his ammo. On the other hand, a range shooter will typically keep their ammunition in a can or mag which means that their ammo will last longer.

Rifle cartridges or shotgun shells used by a hunter have a higher likelihood of coming into contact with water and heat. This can lead to deactivated primer, or worse rust and corrosion.

Rotate your ammunition

The best advice we can give you is to treat your ammunition with how you use it. If you’re using your ammo at the range keep it in a moisture-free area. If you’re a hunger, rounds you’ve taken into the field with you should be used a.s.a.p. or otherwise discarded.

If you carry a weapon with you regularly you should occasionally fire off the rounds and rotate new ones in. Reasons being, your rounds are being exposed to the elements, the feed ramp can cause indentations, and as a precaution, in case there is excess lubricant present. In any case, you should be practicing regularly with your carry weapon so that you are familiar with it.
