Fictional Character Analysis: Chris Redfield

15 Feb

Meet Christ Redfield. He has been in several installments, spin-offs, and other works related to the Resident Evil franchise, but for this particular entry, I’m focusing on the most recent events that Chris has been involved in. Before the events of this particular story, Chris commanded a group of soldiers fighting against a bioterrorism threat, in which certain viruses transform people into horribly mutated humanoids that were ravaging European cities.

His group comes across what they think is a hostage, but she ends up trapping all of the team (save for Chris and another member) and infects them all with a similar virus. Chris was rendered unconscious in a battle and after recovering, he suffered from post-traumatic amnesia. He held overwhelming guilt and became a moody and violent drunk to dull the pain. His surviving team member tracks him down, and forces him to face his past and rejoin the organization. After remembering the past, he becomes increasingly vengeful and his goal gradually shifts from protecting the world from bioterrorism to exacting revenge.

Basic Information
Name: Chris Redfield
Series: Resident Evil 6
Age: 40
Height: 5’11” (181 cm)
Occupation: Bioterrorism Security Assessment Alliance (BSAA) Special Operations Captain
Special Tactics and Rescue Service (STARS) Alpha Team Point Main (formerly)

Personality
Chris shows a great concern for his comrades, even assuring rookie operatives that, “no one gets left behind.” His anger shows when his comrades die in the line of duty, and because he loses his squad at one point of the story, his anger increasingly affects his decision-making. When his surviving teammate confronts Chris about his personal vendetta, Chris continues to have trouble getting his priorities straight, but nevertheless, his organization provides information for him to pursue his goal. In general, Chris displays much anger and guilt.

One Good Quote
“Each and every one of you may be ready to die for our cause, but it’s my job to make sure we all get through this alive.”

This clip shows Chris interacting with his team during a meeting to discuss obstacles and goals for their mission. Chris makes a speech which motivates and encourages his men—telling them to stay together, be a team, and leave nobody behind. He also meets a new member to his team and they briefly speak, and afterwards this rookie is clearly star struck by Chris’s words. However, this is also the team he loses a little later when betrayed by somebody he assumed he was helping, and after losing his men, Chris’s attitudes and objectives become less focused on the well-being of others.

When Chris’s partner confronts him about his skewed goals to exact revenge, the argument in this video breaks out. Chris clearly doesn’t want his judgment or decisions to be wrongfully pointed out. Despite his partner’s attempts to calmly and rationally bring his captain back into a better way of thinking, Chris stays firm in his desire to exact his revenge, and his partner decides to come along.

Chris GradeWhy Follow Chris (What I Can Take Away)

  • Chris really cares about his group members, because he assures them, encourages them, and protects them as best as he can.
  • He doesn’t forget what happens to those he cares about the most.
  • He’s extremely supportive of the idea in leaving nobody behind or not sacrificing anybody.
