  • Broadleaf deciduous tree, 30-60 ft (9-18 m), crown ovate, branches nodding, basal branches pendulous.   Leaves alternate, simple, roundish ovate 5-10 cm long, base obliquely cordate, sharply serrated with teeth having an abrupt sharp tip, glossy dark green above, paler and glabrous beneath except for axillary tufts of brown hairs, fall color is yellow green.  Flowers produced in July, 3-7 per pendulous cluster, floral bract is 5-7.5 cm long, short stalked.  Ovoid fruits 5 mm, tapered to a point, slightly 5-ribbed.
  • Sun.  Tolerates pollution and hot, dry conditions.
  • Hardy to USDA Zone (3) 4      Introduced about 1860, unclear parentage, (T. cordata ? and T. dasystyla).
  • Oregon State Univ. campus: between Kerr Admin. and McAlexander Fieldhouse; also NE Community Hall, toward 15th St.
