This book is dedicated with love to my lifelong friend Jo Brandon, whose devotion, crochet expertise, and good humor have always been there for me. I have always loved knitting flowers, whether as a motif for a full piece, an accent on a garment or bag, or to wear as a pin. The variety of colors and shapes of flowers appeals to me, and has continued to inspire my designs over the years. And yet, when I wrote my book Nicky Epstein’s Knitted Flowers, I was not sure of the reception it would receive from critics, and more importantly, from knitters. After all, a book on just knitted flowers? Would people be interested? Would it have a wide appeal? Well, I needn’t have worried. The book took off like a rocket, with great reviews and widespread enthusiasm from knitters of all levels. It has become a mainstay in the libraries of thousands of knitters around the world. It was then inevitable that my crochet friends would ask the question: “Hey, what about us?” So here it is: Nicky Epstein’s Crocheted Flowers. Crocheting is a wonderful medium to create all kinds of beautifully textured flowers. I’ll show you how to crochet entire projects, create flower add-ons for original or purchased items like skirts, pillows, or even Chinese lanterns, and how to make flowers that stand on their own as a bouquet. I’ll also share with you some unique twists on creating crocheted flowers that I hope will help you think “outside the box” and inspire your own creativity. Spoke, florette, and popcorn patterns can be used to center most of the flowers in the book. The fun thing is, petal flowers are interchangeable! Use the patterns in a variety of combinations

twisted-technique flowers Unlike many of the flowers in Chapters 1 and 2, these flowers are made in easy pattern stitches and then twisted and sewn into shape. The pattern stitches are classic crochet edgings such as scallops, corkscrews, loop stitches, ruffles and fringes. The size of the flowers can be easily adjusted by crocheting shorter or longer pieces before twisting. The weight of the yarn is also a major
` factor in the size of your flowers. Traditional
crocheted flowers were made in #3, #5 or #10 cotton thread, but in this book I have mainly
focused on using heavier yarn weights to update the look and use of crocheted flowers.
